Ja'Marr Chase exits with concussion as Bengals fall 22-17 to Jaguars

Ja’Marr Chase left the field with a concussion during the second quarter of the Cincinnati Bengals’ 22-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 4, 2026, and did not return for the remainder of the game.

The hit came with 12:02 left in the second quarter when Jaguars cornerback Jarrion Jones grabbed Chase’s facemask and linebacker Ventrell Miller delivered a high tackle that struck the crown of Chase’s helmet. Officials penalized the facemask grab but did not flag Miller. Chase remained on the turf clutching his head before medical staff escorted him to the blue medical tent.

After a brief evaluation, the team ruled Chase out for the second half and later confirmed a concussion diagnosis. The All‑Pro receiver had three catches before his exit, contributing modestly to an otherwise stagnant Bengals offense that managed only three points in the first half.

Quarterback Joe Burrow kept the Bengals competitive, completing 39 of 54 passes for 428 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions. Despite Burrow’s production, the Jaguars built a 13‑3 halftime lead, a gap the Bengals could not fully close.

Coach Zac Taylor addressed the situation at halftime, saying, “We’ll figure it out. We’ll see how Chase is doing now, but these guys will sort it out, and we’ll have a good plan for the second half.” The Bengals continued to move the ball in the second half, but without Chase’s deep threat, they struggled to sustain drives.

In the fourth quarter, fellow receiver Tee Higgins also left the game with an injury, further thinning the Bengals’ receiving corps. With both starters out, the team will rely on backups Mitch Tinsley and Dohnte Meyers for the upcoming week.

The injury also impacts the Bengals’ Week 5 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, where Chase is expected to miss practice and game action, leaving the offense to adjust its game plan without one of its marquee playmakers.

Following the loss, the Bengals fell to 2‑2 on the season, extending a two‑game losing streak that began after an opening‑week victory.
